Giovanniel Anzueta: Student Leader Striving for Excellence

At just eight years old, Giovanniel Anzueta moved from Puerto Rico without knowing any English. Through hard work, resilience and determination, he mastered the language and developed into a high-achieving scholar and leader.

At Westover High School, Giovanniel has excelled as an Advanced Placement student, consistently demonstrating discipline and intellectual curiosity. He is deeply involved in leadership across campus, serving in the Student Government Association, as Vice President of the Culture Club, and as the Battalion Commander for the Westover High School Army JROTC program. In addition, he represents his school as a member of the Superintendent’s Student Voices Group, serving as a strong and thoughtful advocate for his peers.

Although Giovanniel leads in many ways, he is most proud of being the Battalion Commander and of being selected for the Student Voices Group.

“These both took outstanding dedication and work ethic,” Giovanniel said. “Each requires commitment and compassion.”

Giovanniel’s leadership extends beyond the classroom. He participates in track and cross-country and competed at Nationals with the JROTC Raider Team. He also faithfully serves on the 1st Impressions Team as a Greeter and Usher at Mark Church of Fayetteville, demonstrating his commitment to service and ministry.

“Giovanniel is a truly unique young man who intentionally chooses not to follow the crowd,” said Dr. Vernon Lowery, principal of Westover. “He demonstrates a level of maturity well beyond his years and strives to stand apart from his peers—something that is especially evident in the way he boldly lives out and displays his faith.”

After graduation, Giovanniel plans to attend Olivet Nazarene University (ONU) to major in Theology and be commissioned as an Officer in the United States Army, where he will continue to grow academically, spiritually and as a servant leader. He has received an Advantage Scholarship and a Visitation Scholarship from ONU.

“Without a doubt, Giovanniel is poised to make a lasting impact wherever his path may lead,” said Lowery. “The Westover learning community is forever changed because of his presence, leadership and unwavering commitment to excellence.”

Giovanniel credits two things for his success: his faith and the many teachers and school leaders he has encountered throughout his time within Cumberland County Schools.

“This is a beautiful place for me, regardless of the difficulty. God has made my entire experience a gentle thing,” Giovanniel said.

He encourages those still in high school to follow a similar path.

“Put your faith in God— truly, and surround yourself with peers that will always point you to good and uplift you.”
