Lanie Myrtle: A Driven Leader with a Heart for Service
It’s always tricky when one of your parents works at your high school. But when your mom is an administrator, things can get even trickier.
Lanie Myrtle, a senior at Gray’s Creek High School, has faced this challenge head-on—with hard work, determination, commitment and always a smile.
“One challenge that I faced during high school was overcoming people's preconceived notions about me since I am an administrator's daughter,” Lanie said. “People thought that I only got recognition or grades because of my mom, but I ignored what people said about me and I worked 10 times harder than anyone, so there was never a doubt that I earned any grades or recognitions that I received.”
Lanie has worked hard indeed. She is a dedicated varsity cheerleader and an active member of the Student Government Association, where she serves as secretary. She is also part of the Gray’s Creek Chorale and Chamber Choir, National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Musical Theatre. Beyond school, Lanie volunteers countless hours giving back to her community, demonstrating compassion, responsibility and a genuine commitment to helping others.
“Lanie Myrtle is a shining example of excellence at Gray’s Creek High School and a well-deserving Cumberland County Schools Standout Senior,” said Lisa Stewart, principal of Gray’s Creek. “Ranked among the top students in her class, Lanie balances academic achievement with leadership and service. A respectful, driven and inspiring young lady, Lanie consistently leads by example and leaves a positive impact wherever she goes.”
After graduation, Lanie will attend the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), where she has been accepted into the Honors College and has earned a $18,000 Merit Scholarship—achievements that reflect her hard work, character and bright future ahead. She plans to get a bachelor’s degree in Tourism, Recreation & Sport with a concentration in Tourism, Hospitality & Events.
“With this degree, I plan on going into Wedding and Event Planning and hope to start my own business one day,” Lanie said. “I was inspired to choose this because I have always enjoyed helping plan events as secretary of the Student Body at Gray's Creek, as well as other activities I have been involved with throughout high school. I also enjoy helping people by taking some of their responsibilities off their plate to make their lives easier. Helping others plan special events, while stressful at times, is also fulfilling.”
Lanie is leaving high school prepared for her future and ready to work toward her goals. She made the most of her high school experience, being challenged in AP and honors coursework while staying involved in multiple activities that provided her with fulfillment and purpose. Thanks to North Carolina’s Career and College Promise program, Lanie was able to earn tuition-free college credit that she can take with her to UNCW.
“Having been a student in Cumberland County Schools for my entire K-12 education, I received a strong foundation in the fundamentals as well as amazing cultural arts opportunities,” Lanie said. “In particular, Gray's Creek High School has provided rigorous coursework, including numerous AP courses, to prepare me for college. The opportunity to be dual enrolled at Fayetteville Technical Community College these last two years has given me a great start on college courses.”
