About Driver and Traffic Safety Education

Driver and Traffic Safety Education teaches students how to operate motor vehicles safely, efficiently, and responsibly. The program includes two phases:

• Phase 1: Classroom Instruction – 30 hours

• Phase 2: Behind-the-Wheel Instruction – 6 hours

These phases work together to provide a complete learning experience.

Note:
North Carolina law requires both phases for students under 18.
Students 18 or older are not required to take driver education. They can apply directly for a learner’s permit or driver license at any NC DMV office.
