During a special Board meeting today, the Cumberland County Board of Education approved a series of updates to Cumberland County Schools (CCS) Choice Programs that will be implemented in phases beginning in the 2027–28 school year and continuing beyond it.
The recommendations reflect a review of program quality, enrollment, facility capacity, regional workforce needs and feedback from students, employees and families. The work supports the Successful Students priority of the district’s Strategic Plan 2026-31.

“We believe CCS is the best educational choice in the region,” said CCS Superintendent Dr. Eric C. Bracy. “With the wide range of opportunities available, students can start here and go anywhere. They can begin their journey in a CCS classroom, discover a meaningful pathway and pursue any goal, from a high-demand career to college, graduate school or even medical school. These updates will help us build those connections more intentionally.”
The updates strengthen or realign opportunities in dual-language immersion, early college and career-connected learning. They include elementary grade-level changes, program rebranding, a new hospitality and tourism pathway and other program adjustments.
The Board also authorized CCS to submit an application for a proposed health sciences early college in partnership with Methodist University. The proposal remains subject to state approval and funding.
Some approved recommendations require additional approvals or depend on separate Board of Education facilities decisions before they can move forward.
“This is an exciting step for Cumberland County Schools because it gives more students an opportunity to explore their interests through clear, connected pathways,” said CCS Chief Academic Officer Dr. Tonya Williams Leathers. “We are also committed to thoughtful planning and clear communication as each phase moves forward.”
Families do not need to take action at this time. CCS will share additional information with families and staff as planning continues.
