For Cumberland County Schools (CCS) students, summer isn't just a break, it's a chance to build a brighter future. Through the Innovative Career Opportunities Now (ICON) program, the district's signature paid internship program, high school students gain hands-on experience with local employers like Cardinal Landscaping, Fayetteville PWC and Cross Creek Subaru, while earning valuable workplace skills, exploring career pathways and even receiving high school credit toward graduation. From résumé writing and interview preparation to financial literacy and professional development, ICON equips students with the tools they need to succeed long after the summer ends.
Designed to support the district's strategic priorities, ICON bridges the gap between classroom learning and the workforce by connecting students with meaningful, real-world career experiences. Eligible students ages 15 and older compete for internships through a professional interview process, then spend four to six weeks working alongside industry professionals across Cumberland County. Whether students are discovering a future career, building technical skills or expanding their professional network, every internship is an investment in their future.
More than a summer job, ICON is helping shape the next generation of confident, career-ready graduates. By strengthening partnerships among schools, businesses and the community, the program continues to create life-changing opportunities that prepare students for success in college, careers and beyond, making workforce development a reality, one internship at a time.
