2026 Feather Ceremony

With the sounds of celebration and tradition filling the auditorium at Gray’s Creek High School, Cumberland County Schools (CCS) marked a meaningful milestone during its seventh annual Feather Ceremony last night. The event brought together 95 American Indian high school seniors from the Class of 2026, representing 12 recognized tribes, for an evening centered around recognition, reflection and community.

Led by the CCS Office of Indian Education, the ceremony served as both a tribute and a sendoff. Each graduate received a feather, an enduring symbol of honor, resilience and cultural pride. It signified not only what they have achieved, but the legacy they carry forward.

Beyond the feather presentations, the ceremony highlighted about 15 students who were awarded college scholarships through the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and the American Indian Society of North Carolina, providing meaningful support as they continue their educational journeys.

Surrounded by proud family members in the audience and a wider community watching via the CCS YouTube channel (shared below), the celebration reached well beyond the auditorium, connecting loved ones near and far in a shared moment of recognition and pride.
