HL VSA Festival

Cumberland County Schools (CCS) hosted its annual Very Special Arts Festival on Thursday, April 2, at the Charlie Rose Agri-Expo Center, where students in CCS' Exceptional Children (EC) services, their families and community partners gathered for a morning of creativity, connection and celebration.

The event embraced this year’s theme of “Anchored in the Arts,” inspired by the district’s focus on excellence and highlighting the role of artistic expression to engage students with disabilities and foster an all-embracing environment.

Students participated in a variety of adaptive and interactive activities designed to support various needs and abilities. This year’s nautical-themed experiences included Lido Deck dancing, sea creature art creation, bookmark making, bowling activities, and a range of fine and gross motor skill stations that encouraged movement, creativity, and self-expression. Students rotated through activity areas and spent time socializing and enjoying time with classmates.

The event also featured a special visit from local first responders, giving students the opportunity to explore emergency vehicles and connect with community helpers in a safe and engaging setting.

“It's a phenomenal experience,” said CCS Executive Director for Exceptional Children Dr. Ayanna Richard. “We call our students exceptional across the board, because they are able to do anything that they put their minds to, given the right circumstances. We want to make sure that they are capable and given every opportunity.”

Longtime emcee Gilbert Baez returned once again, continuing his more than four-decade tradition of bringing energy and enthusiasm to the event.

Now in its 42nd year, the Very Special Arts Festival continues a long-standing tradition that began in 1983, providing students with opportunities to explore their talents, build confidence and create lasting memories through meaningful experiences.
