Cumberland County Schools (CCS) is proud to announce that Aritia Smalls, coordinator of CCS’ Advanced Learning & Gifted Education program, has been appointed chair of the North Carolina Governor’s School Board of Governors.
Smalls will serve a three-year term and will oversee the operations of the Governor’s School of North Carolina, the nation’s oldest statewide summer residential program for gifted and talented high school students.
Administered by the North Carolina State Board of Education and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) through the Office of Advanced Learning & Gifted Education, Governor’s School brings together selected students each summer for an intensive four-week residential learning experience designed to foster academic excellence, creativity and leadership.
After serving one year on the Board of Governors, Smalls was selected to succeed the outgoing, retiring chair. In addition to her new role, she will continue to serve as Regional Co-Lead for Advanced Learning for the Sandhills region and as the ex-officio Presidential Appointee of the North Carolina Association for Gifted and Talented (NCAGT).
