South View High School (SVHS) students got a high-energy reminder yesterday that safe driving takes focus during DUNK! Distracted Driving, a basketball stunt show assembly featuring NBA halftime performers.
The exciting yet powerful program blended dynamic on-court stunts with a clear message for teen drivers: distractions can change lives in an instant.
With approximately 600 students in attendance, the assembly, courtesy of the U.S. Army and Adrenaline Games Alliance (A.G.A.) Nation, emphasized smart decision-making behind the wheel and encouraged students to set boundaries that keep themselves, their passengers and others safe. Event emcee and acrobatic dunker Benji Morgan said the motivation behind the event is personal.
“I’ve known people who have lost their life to distracted driving. Being able to impact someone’s life is why we come out to do this,” Morgan said.
SVHS Army JROTC Senior Instructor Sgt. Maj. (Ret.) Ruby A. Murray said bringing the event to the school was meaningful.
“It meant a lot to bring this event out to the youth today. It showed that building a relationship with your students truly matters, and texting and driving is a no-go,” Murray said.
SVHS senior and JROTC cadet Battalion Sgt. Maj. Nassair Golding shared what he learned during the assembly.
“It’s important that we learn how to be safe on the road in order to reduce fatalities,” Golding said.
Some key takeaways shared with students included:
Steer clear of distractions
Give the road your undivided attention
Never text while driving
Know your limits and driving boundaries
After the show, students had the opportunity to meet the performers for photos and autographs. One student also took home a $100 gift card through a register-to-win promotion sponsored by A.G.A. Nation.
