Cumberland County Schools (CCS) recognized two outstanding contributors this evening for their dedication to students, staff and the broader school community. Traci Brown, the cafeteria manager at Mac Williams Middle School, received the Extra Mile Award for consistently 'going above and beyond' to ensure others are cared for and supported. Cape Fear High School Band Program supporter Phil Walters was named the January recipient of the Committed Community Support Award for his nearly two decades of dedicated service to the Cape Fear High School Band Program.
Extra Mile Recipient: Traci Brown
The Extra Mile Award recognizes employees who consistently exceed expectations and inspire excellence. January’s recipient, Traci Brown, was selected because of her effort to make sure students and staff are cared for, prepared and supported, often stepping in to ensure no one goes without food.
According to Mac Williams Middle School teacher Vicky Brigman, who submitted the nomination, “Brown demonstrated extraordinary commitment during an 8th-grade field trip to the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores. She arrived at school at 4:00 a.m., hours before her normal start time, to ensure that every student and staff member had a packed lunch ready for our 6:00 a.m. departure. She repeated this routine for three consecutive days of field trips without complaint. Brown often uses her own personal account to provide meals for teachers who may have forgotten or been unable to purchase lunch," said Brigman. "She makes sure no one goes without, always treating staff and students like family.”

Committed Community Support Recipient: Phil Walters
The Committed Community Support Award recognizes individuals whose consistent involvement and behind-the-scenes efforts strengthen school programs and enrich the student experience.
As the Cape Fear High School Band Booster President, Walters’ leadership has played a key role in the continued growth and success of the band program. Beyond his leadership role, he is known for his hands-on support, building props, driving moving trucks and helping to ensure each performance runs smoothly. His commitment also extends to organizing and supporting the Colt Classic Marching Band Competition, an event that highlights marching band talent from across North Carolina.
Cape Fear High School Principal Dr. Jason Jordan described Walters' influence at the school. "His tireless efforts, positive attitude and unwavering dedication have made a lasting impact on students, staff and the entire Cape Fear High School community."
