HL Bike Giveaway Event

“And, you get a bike! And, you get a bike! And, you get a bike!”

The joyful chant echoed through the cafeteria at Lucile Souders Elementary School this morning as 58 unsuspecting third graders erupted in cheers, each learning they would soon be taking home a brand-new bicycle. Earlier, four students had already been recognized for their winning essays, but the surprise announcement ensured everyone felt like a winner.

This uplifting effort, sponsored by Olde Fayetteville Insurance & Financial Services, is part of the Bikes for Kids National Foundation, co-founded by the legendary Meadowlark Lemon. The program places brand-new bikes and helmets into the hands of Title I third graders, marking the beginning of a three-year character-building journey.

To participate, students read the book Think Big. Work Hard. Be Kind. No Excuses. and write an essay describing their dreams for the future, an exercise designed to build confidence, spark imagination and reinforce the belief that their goals are within reach.

Adding to the excitement, high school seniors from Cumberland Academy 6–12 and Reid Ross Classical High School delivered heartfelt words of inspiration. Distinguished guests, including members of the Cumberland County Board of Education, local elected officials and community leaders, joined the celebration, making the moment even more memorable.

Now in its fifth year in Cumberland County, Bikes for Kids continues to transform dreams into possibilities—one child and one bike at a time.
