Cumberland County Schools (CCS) proudly hosted its 7th Annual Veterans Day Program yesterday evening, bringing together nearly 100 CCS employees, Cumberland County Board of Education (CCBOE) members, JROTC cadets and community guests to honor the courage, sacrifice and leadership of U.S. veterans from across the school district.
"Tonight, we pause to honor the men and women whose courage and commitment have safeguarded our nation's freedom," said SFC (Ret.) Deanna Jones, chairwoman of the Cumberland County Board of Education. "Many of you continue to serve beyond your military years—whether as educators, mentors, volunteers or parents—pouring that same spirit of dedication into the lives of our students. You help instill in them the strength to lead, the discipline to learn and the compassion to serve others. Thank you for your service, your sacrifice and the powerful example you set for generations to come."
From the Presentation of Colors by the Terry Sanford High School JROTC Color Guard to the closing prayer from South View High School JROTC Instructor SGM (Ret.) Ruby Murray, the event reflected CCS’ commitment to honoring those who have served our nation and continue to serve the Cumberland County community with excellence and integrity.
CSM (Ret.) Earl L. Rice delivered an inspiring address, describing veterans as “humble heroes” who understand that freedom is not free. He emphasized that their legacy is defined by excellence, commitment, dedication and accomplishment, and closed his remarks by quoting former President Ronald Reagan: “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.”
CCS Superintendent Dr. Eric Bracy shared a special video message expressing his gratitude to all CCS veterans for their service and dedication. “Our veterans represent courage, sacrifice and service in its truest form,” said Dr. Bracy. “We are proud to have so many individuals within our CCS family who continue to lead and inspire through their example—both in our classrooms and throughout our community.”
The evening’s celebration reached its peak with heartfelt performances by JROTC cadets from around the county. The ceremony concluded on a stirring note as veterans stood to be recognized during a service medley honoring each branch of the military, accompanied by spirited voices singing along.
This annual celebration remains a cherished CCS tradition, highlighting the district’s deep appreciation for those who have dedicated their lives both to their country and to the education of future generations.
