Cumberland County Schools' (CCS) Margaret Willis Elementary School kicked off the 2025–2026 school year with an energizing first-day celebration.
The morning began with local news stations broadcasting live interviews with CCS Superintendent Dr. Eric Bracy, as he shared insights about the district’s back-to-school readiness and this year’s theme, "Anchored in Excellence." "It's really about staying rooted in what matters most -- the students, the staff and the mission," said the new superintendent. "They all drive the work that will be done across the district."
Dr. Bracy, joined by partners from across the community, greeted students and parents with excitement and encouragement for the year ahead.
Dr. Bracy, along with the CCS mascot, Cooper, Fayetteville Police Chief Roberto Bryan, members of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, from Fayetteville State University (FSU) and Methodist University, and the FSU Royal Court, lined the entrance to the school cafeteria giving students high-fives, cheers and words of encouragement as they entered the building for their first day of learning.
"We thought it might be great for us to come out, greet the students and welcome them on the first day of class," said Dr. Naadiya Hopkins, the assistant vice chancellor for FSU Student Engagement and Leadership. "We simply wanted to encourage them to have fun and enjoy their [school] experience."
Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church members Linda Thomas, Debra Thomas, and Angela Black spent the morning in the cafeteria, lending a hand during breakfast and connecting with students. The volunteers emphasized the importance of giving back to the community, noting that offering extra support is vital because “we are the village” and these students represent the future.
The morning concluded with Dr. Bracy visiting classrooms for almost an hour, observing teaching and learning in action, and speaking directly with students and teachers about their excitement for the new school year.
“Walking around and visiting classrooms, I see instruction on the first day of class, which is always good to see,” said Dr. Bracy. “Also, seeing the joy, hope and energy in our schools reminds us why we do this important work. Together, with our community partners, we are truly 'anchored in excellence' and ready to support every student’s success.”
