CCS Celebrates Custodians, Retirees and Outstanding Service

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Benjamin J. Martin Elementary School had two reasons to celebrate at Cumberland County Schools’ (CCS) annual Custodial Services Appreciation Banquet on Friday, Oct. 23. Gwendolyn “Gwen” McKoy, who serves as the head custodian of the school, received the Neil Brown Service Award, and her custodial team earned the 2025-26 Housekeeping School of the Year Award.

Known throughout her school as “Ms. G,” McKoy brings care to both the building and the people inside it. She celebrates students’ accomplishments, mentors her team and encourages colleagues, sometimes returning with homemade treats when someone needs a lift. She even drives a school bus when needed.

“She does not merely tell others the standard; she models it every day,” wrote McKoy’s principal, Corine O. B. Warren, who nominated her for the service award. “She makes people and places better simply because she chooses to serve.”

The Housekeeping School of the Year Award reflected that same commitment. CCS’ Custodial Services Department selected Benjamin J. Martin Elementary from the 2025-26 Housekeeping School of the Month winners.

Held at New Century International Elementary School, the 1970s-themed banquet brought together custodians, their family members and school and district leaders for dinner, fellowship and recognition.

“You care for our schools and district offices. You care for the people in them,” said CCS Superintendent Dr. Eric C. Bracy. “That dedication helps our students and staff do their best and makes you part of the excellence we’re working toward together.”

That daily care supports the Exceptional Environments pillar of CCS’ strategic plan, helping keep schools clean, safe and welcoming.

The evening also honored retirees and featured guest speaker Marcus Stewart, Sunnyside Elementary School principal and CCS’ 2027 Principal of the Year.
