The Cumberland County Schools (CCS) will close for students on Friday, May 1, changing the day to an optional workday for teachers and school-based staff. Twelve-month staff will follow their normal schedule.
This decision was made after reviewing staff availability, as a significant number of employees have requested leave to attend the education rally in Raleigh. Based on this data, it was determined that adjusting the calendar is necessary to ensure the safety, supervision and overall well-being of all students.
Student meetings, e.g., clubs, organizations, etc., and athletic practices scheduled for Friday, May 1, are canceled. Athletic games, arts education activities and field trips will proceed as planned, provided sufficient personnel are available. Schools will communicate directly with students and families regarding the status of these events. Prime Time will be closed.
Students enrolled in college courses at Fayetteville State University, Fayetteville Technical Community College or through College Connections should follow guidance from their school principal.
As a result of this change, adjustments will be made to the traditional 10-month calendar. May 22, 2026, will now be a regular instructional day with no early release. In addition, May 26, 2026, has been added to the calendar as an instructional day with a two-hour early release and will serve as the last day of school. There will be no adjustments to the year-round or early college calendars.
