We are in the process of recruiting students for the 2026-2027 VanStory Hills Battle of the Books (BOB) Team. The Battle of the Books is a Cumberland County Schools Competition. The competition consists of reading selected books, attached to this letter. Candidates for the team will read each book for comprehension in order to be able to become very familiar with each of them. The competition will be held in late February or early March.
The requirements for the team are:
Students must read and take comprehension tests on each book they have read. Students are encouraged to read a minimum of 5 of the books during the summer. When the student returns they can request to take the comprehension test on the books they have read. Test scores must be 90% or better.
Students must enjoy reading and can read at a high Fifth grade and above level.
Students must be committed to meeting weekly with the coaches and team.
Students must have good academic standing with good behavior.
Students must adhere to a schedule of deadlines for completing the reading of the BOB titles, taking comprehension tests, and Author/Title testing (memorization of all book titles and author names).
Students must follow directions and be a team player.
Students must be able to attend weekly practices on Thursdays from 3:15-4:00
This is a prestigious team and Vanstory traditionally does well. Our goal is to have fun but also to win! Your child’s reading skills and comprehension will be strengthened. Team building is an important part of this competition. Students will learn how to work well in a group, pass reading tests, and have a good time while doing it!
