The legislation for the Year Round School Calendar changed during the 2020 legislative session and was shared with us by DPI representatives after the start of the 2020-2021 school year. The legislation was interpreted and verbally communicated that the year round calendar shall be developed with 45 days for students and 15 days of intersession for each quarter of the school year. The 2021 - 2022 and the 2022-2023 school year calendars were developed with this pattern of 45 student days on and 15 intersession days off.
DPI did not approve the 2022-2023 calendar as developed since the 45 days each quarter included teacher work days and holidays in which students were not receiving instruction. The 2022-2023 Year Round calendar was adjusted to accommodate the legislative requirements.
The language of GS 115C-84.2 is as follows:
Year-round school. --- A school with a single instructional calendar to provide instructional days throughout the entire school calendar year, beginning July 1 and ending June 30.
A plan providing students be scheduled to attend four quarters of between 43 and 47 instructional days each school calendar year, with vacation periods for students of between 14 and 18 days separating each quarter.
