Four State Leaders Visit CCS During ‘Bring a Legislator to School Day’

Cumberland County Schools (CCS) proudly participated in the inaugural Bring Your Legislator to School Day event on May 15, 2023. This statewide event, initiated by the 2021 and 2022 NC State Teachers of the Year and the 2022 NC Principal of the Year and supported by the Public School Forum of North Carolina, aimed to provide legislators with a firsthand look at the successes and challenges within the schools.

Four State Legislators visited schools across the district as part of this initiative, including Senator Val Applewhite, Representative Dr. Frances Jackson, Representative Charles Smith and Representative Diane Wheatley. The legislators were warmly welcomed by students, educators and school leaders, who showcased the innovative teaching practices and the exceptional learning environments in CCS. Throughout the day, the visiting legislators engaged in a variety of activities, including school walkthroughs led by school leaders, faculty and students.

CCS Superintendent Dr. Marvin Connelly, Jr. expressed enthusiasm about the event, stating, "Bring a Legislator to School Day was a tremendous opportunity for us to showcase our district's remarkable achievements and challenges. We are grateful for the legislators' active participation and genuine interest in our schools."
