Cumberland Family Academy's 'Family Reading Fun' Night Draws Hundreds

Cumberland Family Academy (CFA), the district's family outreach arm, kicked off the new year with a 'Family Reading Fun' Night on Thursday at W.H. Owen Elementary School that drew nearly 330 adults and children from across the county.

Throughout the evening, five local school mascots could be seen mingling and taking photos with kids while families socialized and enjoyed hot cheese and pepperoni pizza in the cafeteria.

Dr. Kimberly Johnson, a nationally renowned children's author, gave a high-energy presentation that took the event's excitement to new heights as she read one of her books titled "The Adventures of the Itty Bitty Frog." The Clemson University professor, who is passionate about education and literacy, also shared with the families helpful tips and suggestions on how to make reading fun while helping their children become better learners.

Derrick Bagley, the father of two elementary school students and one middle school student, said he found Dr. Johnson's presentation to be insightful. "As a parent, I know that Dr. Johnson's tips will help me with my kids' literacy development, even helping them to see that reading is important. It helps you become successful."

CFA's Family Reading Fun Night is one of many FREE workshops and educational events planned for the families of Cumberland County Schools (CCS) during the 2022-2023 school year.

"CCS families are engaged and passionate about receiving resources to help their children succeed," said Dr. Lindsay Whitley, the district's associate superintendent for Communications and Community Engagement. "Tonight's turnout was very encouraging. Through Cumberland Family Academy, our district is committed to collectively engaging families, educators and community stakeholders in building student success. Dr. Johnson's presentation resonated with attendees, and they left with actionable resources to encourage literacy at home."
