Hundreds attend Cumberland Family Academy’s College Planning session

November 18, 2022

Nearly 250 parents, guardians and students attended Cumberland County Schools' (CCS) first in-person family engagement session hosted by Cumberland Family Academy (CFA). CFA, the district's family outreach arm, joined forces with Mychal Wynn, a nationally renowned educator, author, and college planning expert, to host an informational session titled College Planning 101: Cash for College, Financial Aid & Scholarships.

Families from across the county met in the auditorium at Westover High School to learn about building a successful high school resume, financial aid basics, college costs, scholarships, eligibility determination and specific programs for N.C. families. Wynn has partnered with families across the country to help students gain access to millions of dollars in scholarships and financial aid. A recording of Wynn's presentation will be posted to the CFA website by Tuesday, Nov. 22, for families to watch on demand.

"What seems impossible doesn't have to be," said Dr. Lindsay Whitley, the district's associate superintendent for Communications and Community Engagement. "Tonight, Mr. Wynn provided families with information to help their students gain acceptance to the colleges of their dreams and graduate debt-free."

Throughout the 2022-23 school year, CCS families will have numerous opportunities to connect with the school system and receive critical information and resources to help their children achieve success in the classroom and beyond.

"Tonight, families showed up in large numbers," said Dr. Whitley. "We look forward to hosting additional sessions for families in the coming months."

About Cumberland Family Academy
Cumberland Family Academy (CFA) provides FREE workshops and educational events for the families of Cumberland County Schools (CCS). As part of its strategic plan, CCS launched CFA during the 2020-21 school year. From research, we understand that students achieve more when families are involved in their education. The purpose of the CFA program is to provide families with tools to support the success of their children’s education and to bring schools, parents/guardians, families, and community organizations together as equal partners.
