Cumberland County Schools Announces Four New School Leaders

Following the recommendation of Cumberland County Schools (CCS) Superintendent Dr. Marvin Connelly, Jr., the Cumberland County Board of Education approved two principal appointments during Tuesday evening's monthly Board meeting.
Following the recommendation of Cumberland County Schools (CCS) Superintendent Dr. Marvin Connelly, Jr., the Cumberland County Board of Education approved two principal appointments during Tuesday evening's monthly Board meeting.
- Amy McDowell has been named the principal of Cumberland Mills Elementary School. McDowell’s career with CCS started in 2002 as a fourth grade teacher at Benjamin Martin Elementary School. She earned her master’s in school administration from Appalachian State University. McDowell has served as an assistant principal in CCS since 2017 and most recently at Cumberland Mills Elementary School.
Dr. Douglas Massengill has been named the principal of Massey Hill Classical High School. From Gardner-Webb University, Dr. Massengill earned his master’s in education in 2013, an educational specialist degree in 2017 and a doctorate in educational leadership in 2018. He began his career in education as an intern teacher at Garner Magnet High School in 2010. He has served in numerous public education roles, including teaching and administrative roles in CCS. Most recently, he worked as an adjunct professor at Gardner-Webb University for the university’s Master’s in Executive Leadership program and as the principal and secondary MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) coordinator of Roseboro-Salemburg Middle School in Sampson County.
Dr. Connelly also announced the transfer of two principals to their new schools:
- Larry Parker has been named the principal of E.E. Smith High School. He most recently served as the principal of Reid Ross Classical School and has been a premier professional of CCS since 2002. Starting as a Pre-K-2 teacher, Parker served in multiple positions as he advanced into leadership roles throughout the district, including assistant principal at E.E. Smith High School from 2012-2014. He earned two master's degrees from Campbell University, one in education and the other in school administration.
- Tyson Johnson has been named the principal of Reid Ross Classical School. She joined CCS in 2007 as an English teacher at E.E. Smith High School and most recently served as the principal of Cumberland Mills Elementary School. She obtained her master’s degree in school administration from Fayetteville State University in 2011. Johnson began her administrative career in CCS as a School Administrative Intern in 2010 and went on to become an assistant principal at South View High School in 2012.
