Band and Orchestra Students Enjoy Summer Music Workshops
Cumberland County Schools is proud to announce that more than 100 young band and orchestra students recently participated in the 40th year of Summer Music Workshops.
The workshops culminated in ensemble performances for family and friends to enjoy. With social distancing protocols in place, the band workshop selected to perform its culminating concert virtually using WebEx. The orchestra workshop chose to host an outdoor concert in the garden at John Griffin Middle School. Event organizers said that both concerts were "very exciting as many students had longed to play with an ensemble again."
This summer's music workshops focused on enhancing the young musicians' ensemble experience and identifying and solving any learning loss from the past school year. The workshop faculty were able to provide challenging opportunities for band and orchestra students to enhance their knowledge of music within an ability-level group experience that included small group, large ensemble, audition preparation and concert activities.
The 2021 Summer Band Workshop faculty members were Larry Harvey (Lead) from Massey Hill Classical High School, Joseph Conti from Reid Ross Classical School and Steven Kelly from Gray's Creek Middle School. Janice Swoope from Reid Ross Classical School served as the lead for the 2021 Summer Orchestra Workshop and worked alongside faculty members Katelyn Cashwell from Massey Hill Classical High School and Nathan Artley from Pine Forest Middle School.
CCS' Arts Education Program has sponsored the Summer Music Workshops for band and orchestra students since 1981.
