Cumberland County Schools (CCS) proudly announces the recipients of two highly coveted awards in our community for February. Tinna Mapp, a dedicated clerk at John Griffin Middle School, has been honored with the Extra Mile Award. Keith Collier, the steadfast President of the Pine Forest High School Athletic Booster Club, is recognized as the recipient of the Committed Community Support Award.

Extra Mile Award Recipient: Tinna Mapp

The Extra Mile Award celebrates employees who consistently exhibit outstanding performance and inspire others to strive for excellence.

Tinna Mapp, the Extra Mile Award recipient, was chosen for her exceptional communication and listening skills, showcasing her patience, compassion and understanding of student needs. Cristen Frazier, Instructional Coach at John Griffin Middle School, noted, "She is personable, imaginative, intelligent and is motivated by a deep sense of personal pride as well as genuine concern for the welfare of scholars, staff, families and our community." According to Frazier, Mapp is always ready to step in and be a problem solver in any situation. Committed Community Support Award Recipient: Keith Collier

The Committed Community Support Award is presented to an individual or group for their selfless dedication to supporting the school system. Keith Collier, the awardee of the Committed Community Support Award, dedicates nearly three days of his time per week on average to raising funds for Pine Forest High School Athletics.

Lonnie Cox, Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at Pine Forest High School, expressed, "Mr. Collier's commitment to Pine Forest High School is incredible. He goes above and beyond to not only support our athletic program but also to build a bridge of communication and trust between the school and the surrounding community." Cox continued, "He genuinely loves Pine Forest High School, its students and staff, and the community as a whole. We are proud to nominate him for this award."

Extra Mile Award

The Extra Mile Award is designed to acknowledge employees who demonstrate a sustained high level of performance and inspire others to do their best. Richard Grice, the current manager overseeing the HVAC project at Mary McArthur Elementary School, has been awarded the Extra Mile Award for his unwavering commitment and exceptional efforts to ensure the comfort and safety of the students.

Lisa Gillespie, the school’s principal, shared praises about his work ethic in her nomination submission. "Mary McArthur Elementary is thankful for his hard work, attention to detail and care for the students and staff," said Gillespie. "The goal of CCS Operations is 'to provide a clean, safe, supportive environment for the staff and students and to ensure that facilities are efficiently operated, well maintained and adequately supplied' and Mr. Richard Grice is this goal personified," continued Gillespie.

Committed Community Support Award

The Committed Community Support Award is given to an individual or a collective group who selflessly supports the school system. This award was presented to Antonio Daniels and Dr. Lynn Blackshear-Ray of Living In Authority Ministries’ Level Up Youth Enrichment Program. 

J.W. Coon Elementary School Principal Tianna O’Brien highlighted the program's significant impact on at-risk students at the school. The Level Up program operates across multiple schools, providing tutoring, mentorship, meals and engaging activities. O’Brien expressed her gratitude toward the program, “Our students will forever be changed by this wonderful opportunity. This has impacted our school community in a huge way.”

Cumberland County Schools (CCS) is proud to announce the December winners of two highly sought after awards in our community. Shannon Sykes, a dedicated social worker at both J.W. Coon Elementary and Gray's Creek Elementary, has been awarded the Extra Mile Award. Jeff "Goldy" Goldberg, the long-time, recently retired and revered host of local radio show "Good Morning Fayetteville with Goldy," is the recipient of the Committed Community Support Award.

Extra Mile Award Recipient

The Extra Mile Award honors employees who consistently demonstrate exceptional performance and inspire others to strive for excellence.

The Extra Mile Award recipient, Shannon Sykes has been able to navigate being the social worker at two schools. "Sykes goes above and beyond the call of duty at J.W. Coon Elementary School and Gray's Creek Elementary School," said J.W. Coon Elementary School Principal Tianna O'Brien. "She makes each student and family’s needs a priority each day and ensures that there are no barriers that hold them back.”

Sykes initiated the Care Counts Laundry Program by Whirlpool, securing a $10,000 grant, a commercial washer and dryer, and essential supplies for the school, easing the burden of students facing hardships. Her initiatives also include a food and necessity pantry.

"I am proud of the work that Mrs. Sykes is doing for our school community and know that her work will continue to have an impact for years to come," continued O'Brien.

Committed Community Support Award Recipient

The Committed Community Support Award is given to an individual or a collective group for their selfless dedication in supporting the school system. Jeff "Goldy" Goldberg, the recipient of the Committed Community Support Award, is known throughout the school district for his work and contributions. 

Throughout his illustrious career, Goldy has generously opened the airwaves of his show, allowing countless CCS staff and Board of Education members to communicate vital news and updates. "After delivering over 9,000 radio shows, Goldy has become a staple of our community, particularly renowned for his unwavering support of the Cumberland County Schools (CCS)," said CCS Associate Superintendent Dr. Lindsay Whitley. "His role as the emcee for our celebrations, including the prestigious Teacher and Principal of the Year events, has added a touch of class and enthusiasm that only he could provide," said Dr. Whitley.  

"As Goldy transitions into retirement, we wish to express our deepest gratitude for his tireless advocacy and support. His legacy will not be measured in broadcasts or accolades, but in the lasting impact he has had on our educational community," continued Dr. Whitley.

The Committed Community Support Award is presented to an individual or group for selflessly supporting the school system. Nick J. Poulos, the recipient of the Committed Community Support Award, has shown himself to be more than deserving of this honor. 

"Nick has consistently demonstrated strong support for Cumberland County Schools, forging valuable partnerships with multiple schools and departments throughout the years," said CCS Parent Facilitator Betty Hagan. Poulos was asked to help with a short-notice request to help honor grandparents at South View Middle School (SVMS) and he 'stepped up to the plate.' Superior Bakery filled the doughnut order for SVMS and had it available for pick up the morning of the event, which made Grandparents Day 2023 a huge success! 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Yvonne Smith, the recipient of the Committed Community Support Award, is a parent whose children attended E. Honeycutt Elementary School through the years. "There are few faces more recognizable than Yvonne Smith at Honeycutt Elementary" said Antonio Valcarcel, a teacher assistant at the school. "She truly puts her best efforts forth in serving our school and Jack Britt High School, and I don't think she gets enough credit for it. That's why I feel that Yvonne Smith deserves to be recognized."

Smith extends her reach to Jack Britt High where she actively participates in the music program and serves on a parent committee that is responsible for planning events for the graduating Class of 2024. Also, her three-year commitment to the PTA board as Secretary and her current role as Treasurer at Honeycutt Elementary, reflects her tireless dedication to students, their families and the school community.

Cumberland County Schools surprised four Extra Mile Award Winners and the Committed Community Support Award Winner for the month of January 2023. These passionate individuals have shown they are willing to go the extra mile to help the community of Cumberland County Schools.
