As authorized by the 2013 North Carolina General Assembly in its Appropriations Act (SB 402), each Local Education Agency (LEA) has been permitted to charge a fee for driver's education courses.

Fee Structure: 

Standard fee:$65.00 per student 

Reduced fee: $32.50 for students who qualify for free or reduced lunch.

This fee is applicable to the classroom theory phase of Driver Education, which will be conducted at each high school, as well as for private and homeschool students.

Eligibility:

Each eligible student under North Carolina General Statute 20-88.1 is entitled to a one-time opportunity through their school system to receive driver’s education instruction. After this initial course, any further instructions must be obtained privately through a commercial provider.

Next Steps:

Students who have been accepted into the Driver Education class will receive a welcome letter via email. This letter will include important details about the course, along with a payment link that can be accessed through School Cash Online.
