Limited Learner Permit Information
Obtaining a Level I Limited Learner’s Permit: Cumberland County Schools
You must be 15 years old to apply for an NC learner's permit. The items listed below will be needed to obtain a Level I Limited Learner’s Permit:
Certified copy of the birth certificate;
Original Social Security Card;
Driver Education Certificate – Form 452 (does not expire). Upon completion of 30 hours of classroom and the 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, your behind-the-wheel instructor will issue you the Driver Education Certificate - Form 452; and
Driving Eligibility Certificate (DEC). This certificate shows that you are passing and have not dropped out of school. This certificate must be obtained from your school. The Driving Eligibility Certificate must be signed by the parent or legal guardian. It may take up to 24 hours to receive a Driving Eligibility Certificate from your school. The Driving Eligibility Certificate (once dated) is valid for 30 days only.
Home School students must obtain the Driving Eligibility Certificate by calling 919-733-4276.
An application for a permit must be signed by the applicant and a supervising driver. A supervising driver must be a parent, grandparent, or guardian of the permit holder or a responsible person approved by the parent or guardian. The supervising driver must be a licensed driver who has been licensed for at least five years and who resides in this state.
