Spring Orchestra Festival
  • Beginning at the fifth-grade level, the String Orchestra program is offered to all interested fifth-grade students as part of a sequential instructional program that continues through middle and high school. Two auditioned countywide orchestra ensembles provide challenges beyond the classroom – the Middle School Youth Orchestra (MSYO, gr. 6-8) and the Cumberland County Youth Orchestra (CCYO, gr. 9-12). While a string ensemble in the fall, CCYO expands to a full orchestra with the addition of band students in the spring.  The All County High School Orchestra clinic, a rigorous two-day clinic with a guest conductor, provides orchestra students with an exceptional opportunity for learning. In addition, the Annual Spring Orchestra Festival is two nights of concerts featuring different grade levels of orchestra students as well as MSYO and CCYO.

  • Summer Orchestra Workshop

The Arts Education Program of Cumberland County Schools is pleased to offer the fortieth annual Summer Orchestra Workshop.  The orchestra workshop is open to all orchestra students (violin, viola, cello and bass) in grades five through twelve, who have successfully completed one year of instruction. Workshop procedures will follow all current CDC and NCDHHS guidelines for student safety including the wearing of masks and social distancing.

The orchestra workshop for elementary, middle and high school students are planned for June 14 - 24 (excluding June 18) at John Griffin Middle School from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon daily.  The workshop is designed to provide a challenging opportunity for orchestra students to enhance their knowledge of music within an ability-level group experience.  Experiences will include small group, large ensemble, audition preparation, and concert activities based upon student levels, interest, and total workshop enrollment. Students who wish to change from one string instrument to another instrument are encouraged to attend the Summer Orchestra Workshop so that they will be ready for the upcoming school year. While the workshop is designed for in-person instruction, virtual participation may be offered as needed.

The total cost for the two-week workshop is $50.00.  Students and parents will need to arrange daily transportation.  Students may wish to bring a snack for the daily break. Registration for orchestra students is on Monday, June 14 from 8:30 - 9:00 a.m. in the cafeteria at John Griffin Middle School. Please download, fill out and return the application form (above) with $50.00 to your orchestra director by May 21, 2021.  All checks should be made payable to the Cumberland County Schools. Ensembles will be determined by the earliest returns.  All payments are non-refundable after May 21. You may also mail the registration form with payment to:
