The 2011-2012 school year brings
significant and exciting changes for the Cumberland County
School system. Although in Cumberland County, we had already
begun our work in these areas, this past year, North Carolina
was awarded the Race to the Top grant which focuses on
increasing student achievement, increasing graduation rates,
increasing college enrollment and increasing college readiness.
This grant is allowing us to fund wireless access in all of our
schools, and to provide technology tools to teachers and
students.
Providing a world class education to
over 53,000 students is our goal. We have continued efforts to
remain on the cutting edge offering students educational
opportunities to prepare them for a global society.
Additionally, our schools offer a wide range of choices for
students from a robotics team, an i3D lab, and career academies
focused on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in
high schools, to increased smart board technology and computers
in all classrooms, we remain committed to increasing
technological opportunities for students.
Recognizing the value of providing educational
opportunities to students at early ages, several of our
elementary schools offer language immersion programs and we are
committed to expanding these programs to other schools. In our
efforts to prepare students for grades Pre-K through 20, we not
only have strong programs in place for early grades, but we also
have strong partnerships with FTCC and FSU which allow our
students to accelerate their learning by earning college credit
as they attend high school.
This year we will open our second Early
College High School which will focus on international diplomacy,
language, and culture.
We are excited about the next steps
for Cumberland County Schools, but we cannot realize ambitious
goals without the support of the community. We are proud of our
military community, and are fortunate to have strong community
partnerships to support us in preparing students to be
successful. I want to take this opportunity to thank you for
your support. Cumberland County deserves to have the very best
school system for our students and community. Together, we can
continue to realize the dreams of our students!
