Introduction:
School readiness
is an important issue facing the nation. The first National
Educational goal states, “All children in American will start
school ready to learn”. Cumberland County Schools believes this
is critical for students’ success in later years of schooling.
Cumberland County Schools offer an array of programs and
services to preschool students. These programs and services are
described on this web page.
Title 1

Title 1
Pre-Kindergarten is a federally funded program that serves
children and families with the greatest educational needs as
determined by screening. This program is designed to provide
quality educational experiences for 4-year old children that
will help them prepare for successful kindergarten and other
educational settings.
Eligibility
The child must be
4 years of age by August 31st of their Pre-Kindergarten year.
Children selected for participation should qualify as
evidenced by multiple criteria (developmental screening, parent
observation and teacher observation). Schools of choice and
employee requests are non-applicable. Children must reside in
Cumberland County and only the parent or legal guardian may
register the child.
North Carolina Pre-K (NCPK)

The
NCPK
Program is a state funded Pre-Kindergarten program. This
program is designed, to provide quality experience for 4-year
olds who are at risk for school failure in order to enhance
their readiness for Kindergarten.
Eligibility
The child must be
4 years of age by August 31st of their Pre-Kindergarten year.
Children must meet “at risk” criteria as defined by the state of
North Carolina. The criteria includes family income, identified
disabilities, parent employment, military status and English
proficiency.

Literacy Program

The CCS Family Literacy Program provides a comprehensive family
literacy program that consists of Adult Education, Children’s
Education, Parent Time, Parent and Child Together Time (PACT),
and home visits. This program promotes adult literacy and
empowers parents to support the educational growth of their
children. The program is located on the campus of Howard Health
& Life Sciences High School
Eligibility
Several criteria must be met:
the parent must qualify for the GED/ESL program sponsored by
Fayetteville Technical Community College, the preschool child
must be age 4 by August 31st, and the parent must be willing and
able to participate in all components of the program.

The Exceptional
Children's Preschool Program serves 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds (not
eligible to attend kindergarten) who have identified
disabilities as defined by the Individuals with Disabilities
Education Act.
